The gloves came off this weekend as the Lowcountry Highrollers skated against their most notorious opponents yet – each other! The league split into three teams to duke it out in our Sibling Rivalry!
The first bout featured a rematch of last season’s intraleague showdowns, with the Holy City Heartbreakers facing off against the Swamp Foxes. The Swamp Foxes hit the track with their teeth bared and were up 36-0 in just a few short minutes. The Heartbreakers knuckled up, and with some smart blocking and a 20-point power jam by Vixen Dickson, they were back in the game. The punk rockers continued to fight their way back to within mere points, but when the final whistle blew, the Swamp Foxes took the win, 55-53.
The next bout featured our brand new intraleague team, the Ashley Riverdolls. The sassy sailors bedecked in blue went up against their unruly red-clad sisters, the Heartbreakers. Both teams sent out strong and clever jammers, and the score remained close for the first half of the 20-minute bout. The Heartbreakers picked up their momentum and rocked it right to the end, winning 73 – 47.
The crowd was treated to a fantastic performance by the always-entertaining ladies of Homespun Hoops (wearing some Heartbreaker red!), and then we named our favorite derby girls. Our fans chose Swamp Fox Green-Eyed Sniper, Heartbreaker Jungle Jane, and Riverdoll Dee-Dee Destroy-her!
After a short break, we were back to the derby action. The Riverdolls were just aching for a win, and came out full steam against the Swamp Foxes, building strong walls and shutting down the foxy jammers. It was a battle of blockers as jammers had to fight hard for every point. The Riverdolls pulled ahead with just under three minutes left to go, but Swamp Fox jammer Goldee Headlocks snagged a grand slam to tie it up. Swamp Foxes got one more point on the next jam, and the Riverdolls quickly called a timeout with just three seconds left to allow for one more jam. The crowd was on its feet as the last jam whistle blew and the pack took off. Swamp Fox jammer Lex fought her way through the pack first and called it off, securing the Swamp Fox win!
With two wins and no losses, the Swamp Foxes took home the Sibling Rivalry trophy!
Thanks to the generosity of our fans and the amazing prizes donated by Pabst Blue Ribbon and Affordabike (just to name a few!), we raised $933 to be donated directly to our featured charity, the Lowcountry Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (LEAP). This money will allow the organization to continue providing support and therapeutic care to children, adolescents, and adults who have suffered trauma, abuse, neglect, and mental disabilities.
The family rift has been temporarily mended, but the sisters will be back at each other’s throats at our Intraleague Championship on October 8th at the McAlister Fieldhouse.
Don’t miss the reunified Lowcountry Highrollers in action on August 27th. Both the Bruisin’ Betties and All-Stars will be taking on the Charlotte Roller Girls in a rematch of May’s bout on their turf. The Betties are looking to avenge their early season loss, and the All-Stars are out to preserve their undefeated season. Mark your calendars for Bloodbath and Beyond!
We want to show our love to the volunteers, sponsors, referees, NSOs, EMTs, photographers, and fans who support us and our sport. Without you, all we do is skate fast and turn left.
Your final scores:
Swamp Foxes 55 – Holy City Heartbreakers 53
Holy City Heartbreakers 73 – Ashley Riverdolls 47
