Hurricane Irene took a detour Saturday, but our own Hurricane Camille and the rest of the Lowcountry Highrollers were kickin’ up a storm at the Citadel McAlister Fieldhouse!
The first bout kicked off with the Bruisin’ Betties once again going skate to skate with the Charlotte Roller Girls B Dazzlers. The Betties started off strong and took the early lead, but too many trips to the penalty box gave the B Dazzlers opportunities for easy points. This bout featured some big rivalries on the jammer line, with Major Threat taking on Margaret Snatcher and Ringo Starrdust facing off against Lykr C’leen. Blockers Dame Right and Lulu Cthulhu were mixing it up in the pack, trying to bust up the purple walls. With the B Dazzlers in the lead, Miss Hawaiian Trippabitch picked up a big 14 points on a power jam right before halftime. After the half, the Betties continued to battle back, getting within 6 points of the B Dazzlers. The Betties fought till the end, but when the final whistle blew, the B Dazzlers skated away with the win. The final score was Charlotte Roller Girls B Dazzlers 106, Lowcountry Highrollers Bruisin’ Betties 85.
The second bout of the evening featured another Charlotte vs. LCHR rematch. The Highrollers All-Stars were out to preserve their undefeated season against a Charlotte squad that was looking for a little revenge. Just like when these teams met in May, the bout started out slow and strategic. The first few low-scoring jams were marked by strong blocker positioning and smart jam-calling by the jammers. Highroller power blockers Sexual Chocolate and Detroit Funk set their sights on Charlotte jammers Da Bomb-chell and Shawn Shank Redemption, giving our jammers Green-Eyed Sniper and Tropikally Punch opportunities to pick up the points. After an exciting first half full of lead changes, the Highrollers were only up by three at halftime and it was still anyone’s game. The second half featured more smart play, with the Highrollers working together to bust up the Charlotte defense. Buoyed by jammer and all-around badass Lex McCusker’s huge power jam with 10 minutes left in the half, the Highrollers carried their momentum to another victory! The final score was Lowcountry Highrollers All-Stars 151, Charlotte Roller Girls All-Stars 114, and your LCHR All-Stars remain undefeated!
Our featured charity for the bout was the Teacher’s Supply Closet. Highrollers fans raised over $400 for the organization in our charity raffle, as well as donating several boxes of school supplies which will directly benefit teachers and students in Charleston County. We are also thrilled to have students from Pattison’s Academy join us on the track for some fun, fast-paced laps with derby girls!
We’d like to thank the College of Charleston Belly Dancing Club for the fantastic halftime performance, our wonderful fans who came out to cheer us on, our rockin’ sponsors who support us, all of our dedicated Street Teamers, volunteers, and NSOs who give their time to make this league a success, the hard-working referees who keep the game fair, safe, and fun, and the Charlotte Roller Girls for being great competitors and classy ladies. Derby love!
The Highrollers will hit the road on September 25th, taking on the Richland County Regulators at the National Guard Armory in Columbia. Want to join us? Get your tickets here. We love to see support when we’re on the road!
You can catch your hometown roller girls back at McAlister Fieldhouse for another evening packed with derby action. The Cape Fear Roller Girls will be in town to take on the LCHR All-Stars, and then all your favorite Highrollers will be laying it all out on the line in the Intraleague Championship. The Swamp Foxes won the trophy at Sibling Rivalry this summer, and the Ashley Riverdolls and Holy City Heartbreakers are itching to take the title for themselves. Don’t miss the CHUCKTOWN THROWDOWN on Saturday, October 8th.
